Crashing Water Theatre Company presents Spike Heels – a razor-sharp, cheeky and deeply funny play by American writer Theresa Rebeck (Seminar, The Bells) and directed by Award-winning Australian filmmaker Serhat Caradee (Cedar Boys, A Lion Returns), opening at the Sydney Fringe new pop-up venue Fringe HQ Newtown on Wednesday 19 May – Saturday 29 May.

Set in 1990s Boston, a modern-day gender/power dynamic comes into play when a spritely young woman finds her identity tussled between a patronising scholar, a misogynistic lawyer and the scholar’s jealous fiancée. Frustratingly, Spike Heels is just as relevant as ever.

With the play’s revival situated amid the recent Australian revelations of large-scale sexual misconduct in parliament and the corporate world, Spike Heels demonstrates to us exactly how little has changed in thirty years, and how far we have yet to go.

Director Serhat Caradee is known for bringing attention to social discord in suburban life to screen comments;

It’s such a pleasure to work with the  incredible cast of Spike Heels. The play has all the hallmarks of a classic comedy; with fiery characters, intense relationships and the never ending tug of war of the sexes”.

Producer Joshua Horwitz adds; “We’re bringing Spike Heels to Newtown because it’s an engaging and hilarious piece of writing. On top of that, having not been produced on Sydney stages for some time now, not only will our Sydney audience be entertained by this cheeky play, it’s also relevant and timely”.
